Super Junior, After School, and BoA Go Crazy For I’m A Singer
The current line-up consists of Park Jung Hyun (Lena Park), Lee Sora, Kim Bum Soo, Lim Jae Bum, Yoon Do Hyun, Kim Yeon Woo, and BMK. Each contestant also has a comedian assigned to them, who acts as their manager for the duration of the show.
Korea’s got a bad case of the I Am A Singer virus. This past week broke the show’s viewership record with 10.7% in the ratings, which is pretty impressive considering its shared time slot with KBS’s 1 Night 2 Days.
And Korean celebs are no exception to this craze.
Super Junior’s Shindong, Heechul, Leeteuk, and Yesung
When I Am A Singer first started up, Super Junior member Shindong was an immediate fan. He tweeted, “I’m watching… I want to see my seniors! So nervous! I want to be a manager too!”
In a later interview, Shindong told reporters, “I was really surprised at the idea of bringing such legendary seniors together into a single show.”
Heechul added, “I really liked being able to hear songs from the past.” Yesung, who lives near contestant Yoon Do Hyun, expressed both his excitement and envy of seeing his neighbor perform. “If the opportunity arises, I would love to go on the show at least once.”
Meanwhile, Super Junior leader Leeteuk joked that he watched KBS’s 1 Night 2 Days and SBS’s Running Man instead because I Am A Singer replaced his cancelled show, Enjoy Today, for which he had been an MC. All kidding aside, Leeteuk mentioned that it might be a good idea to have the first place winner leave, or graduate from, the show instead of eliminating the last place contestant.
After School’s Jooyeon tweeted a picture of her group members fully immersed in the show.
She commented that everyone was so impressive and that her members had lost their souls to the television.
This past week, contestant Lee Sora did a mysterious rock rendition of BoA’s “No. 1,” which earned her second place – her highest ranking yet.
BoA, who is currently filming her movie Cobu 3D, tweeted that watching Lee Sora’s remake performance gave her goosebumps. She thanked her senior for interpreting the song in such a cool way.
BoA later tweeted, “Next year that song will be ten years old… Time goes by so quickly… But I’m so happy that I have a song that is still so loved.”
She also tweeted at Yoon Do Hyun that she was an avid viewer of the show and that she missed him. How cute!
Kim Ah Joong
Actress Kim Ah Joong (200 Pound Beauty, Sign) added herself to this list when she confessed to being a huge fan of the show on air at Yoon Do Hyun’s radio show.
DJ Yoon Do Hyun asked her what television shows she watched recently. Without a moment’s hesitation, Kim Ah Joong answered with “I Am A Singer” and gushed about her love for the show. “It’s the first variety show that made me cry on multiple occasions.” [source]
